Meeting Business
Don't forget about the Denver ID User Group Web site www.idugdenver.net for announcements, a community forum, and more. This is where you can get the most up-to-date information about anything going on in our group.

Bring a friend to the meeting and get $5 in Auction Bucks to use for any of the wonderful books, software, or other items available at each meeting's auction. They can even be applied to the full version of InDesign CS3. When we meet our 50 member attendance goal, there will be a free drawing for a copy of Adobe Creative Suite CS3, which has a retail cost of about $1,800! So spread the word!

The product auction was a success. We had all types of products and software available to bid on. The items included everything from books to software to iPod and iPhone accessories to trade magazine subscriptions. Nearly $300 was raised to help support our meetings (food, location and speakers). Thank you to everyone who bid! There will be a variety of items available at each meeting. Before the meeting some of the items available for auction will be available for preview at www.idugdenver.net/forum.

Want to continue a meeting discussion after the meeting? We are carrying over all the fun to the Exchange Tavern in Westminster on 120th between Federal and Sheridan Blvds. They have been providing us with delicious tea and supplies at our meetings. The Exchange Tavern is a locally owned and operated Irish pub, serving great Irish fare, full bar, and coffeehouse specialties. The pub is equipped with Wi-Fi throughout (as well as electrical access and even wired internet connections at every table). Please join us!

Have a meeting topic that you are dying to know about or would you like to do a presentation? Please send an e-mail to admin@idugdenver.net and be sure to fill out that info on each meeting's evaluation form.

Presentations

WHO WANTS TO BE AN INDESIGNAIRE!
Presenters: Jeff Gamet (Gameshow Host) and Erica Gamet (Game Controller)
Presentation Summary:
The meeting attendees tried out their InDesign knowledge in a game of "Who Wants to Be an InDesignaire." Sound familiar? Even though no real millions (or hundreds for that matter) passed through any of our hands it was a fun way to learn more about the features of InDesign. Many of use realized very quickly that we didn't know as much as we thought but it was still entertaining and educational. And fun prizes were handed out for participating. Keep a look out for more fun and games at future meetings.

MASTERING MASTER PAGES
Presenter: Erica Gamet
Presentation Summary:
What's so great about using Master Pages in InDesign...EVERYTHING! If you are asking yourself, "What's a Master Page?" the answer is simple. A Master Page is a way to add consistent recurring elements (like text or graphics) to any or all of your document pages without having to add the items manually.

Open InDesign and start a new document, then go to Window > Pages to pull up your Pages panel. You can add items to an existing Master Page, create a new one, and even base one Master Page on another. Just as you add elements to a regular page you can add the same to a Master Page. So, if you have recurring headers or footers you might want to add them to your Master Page. If you have a page that you don't want any of those elements on it you can just drag the "none" icon in the page panel over the page that you don't want to have any elements on.

There are many different elements that you can add to a Master Page. You can add automatic numbering and Section Headers on your pages through the Type menu. If you create a document page that you think would be a good Master Page, instead of recreating it as a Master Page, you can drag the page thumbnail into the Master Page section and it will automatically add it as a Master Page.

Another timesaver when working in multi-page documents is automating story jumps. So, if you have a story that jumps to another page, you can create a Text frame for the "continued on" text as well as the "continued from" text that will automatically update the page number if either frame from the story is moved to another page. To use this feature, use the Next Page Number and Previous Page Number options from the Type>Insert Special Character>Markers menus.

So next time before starting that large document, think about setting up some Master Pages and Sections. It'll save you a lot of time and frustration!
