This presentation actually has given me hope again in my business. I feel encouraged and excited for the future. I appreciate Sappi sharing the market research with us.
We kicked off the new year with a fantastic speaker. Daniel Dejan, North American ETC (Education, Training, Consulting) Print & Creative Manager for Sappi Fine Paper, presented two relevant topics at Schoolcraft College the night of January 13. All attendees received two accompanying presentation publications which will prove to be invaluable resources.
Daniel discussed how the print industry can grow its share by proving its effectiveness as part of the communications mix. Our consumer society is abound with new devices, many hand-held, as primary sources for communications and intra-connectivity which leads traditional, legacy medias such as television, radio and print to ask the larger questions “Where do we fit in?” and “Is print truly a waning media?” Using elements from Sappi’s “Life With Print, Direct Mail and Brochures & Catalog Campaigns,” this discussion demonstrated the way print adds value to capturing memories, imagination and attention to build brands, sell goods and deliver corporate messages. If you missed this meeting, take a look at the supporting research. Informational data slides from Daniel's presentation are posted in the PDF below.
After our break, Daniel presented a comprehensive demonstration of the latest varnish and coatings technology using the “Standard #3: Varnishes & Coatings.” The visually captivating book is filled with comparisons and examples of spot, halftone, and tinted varnishes, as well as aqueous and ultraviolet coating techniques such as strike-through, textured, soft-touch, scented, and thermochromatic effects. This Sappi Standard contains practical and informative tips, print demonstrations, and a glossary of terms. As further example of Sappi’s commitment to sustainability, all of the techniques shown are eco-friendly and non-toxic, and are achieved using ingredients that are recyclable. Varnishes aren’t what they used to be!
Visit www.sappi.com for tools and resources which include technical brochures available for download, a glossary of printing and paper terms, explanation of how paper is made, and more. Check out their Initiatives including Ideas That Matter. And a big thank you to Sappi rep Sheryl Wilson for arranging Daniel’s presentation for us.
There was lots of loot to give away for our raffle: Shutterstock T-shirts; books; a subscription to StockLayouts template library; a RealVue 3D Desktop plug-in; a FoldRite Template Master plug-in; subscriptions to InDesign Magazine; Gridiron’s Flow software; Markzware plug-ins; and one copy of Dreamweaver CS4. Everyone received a notepad donated by ArborOakland Group (www.arboroakland.com), an issue of Layers Magazine, lip balm from Shutterstock, and a poster from Sappi.
