Meeting notes prepared by Sean Melom
Over 100 people filled the lecture hall at MCAD for this meeting of the InDesign User Group.
The meeting started off with Keith Gilbert’s presentation on creating contact sheets in InDesign, starting from the Bridge. As usual, Keith’s presentation included many useful observations on the functions of InDesign. He also provided the group with some of the scripts he’s written to make contact sheets easy to whip up in no time. Among the questions Keith answered was “How do I write scripts?” Keith’s answer was “that sounds like a good topic for another meeting!” (One I’m looking forward to).
Next up was Dave Henderleiter, another Adobe Certified Trainer. Dave presented a workflow for the layout of a small booklet. This file used layers to make it possible to keep one layout that was translated into many languages. In the process, Dave showed us some of his tricks for master pages, Character styles, and setting up layered PDFs. Dave answered a few questions, including one or two on the subject of importing XML data into InDesign.
To close the evening’s presentations, Charlie Townes from Olson came to the stage. Charlie’s presentation focused on linked graphic images in text boxes. Charlie’s team at work had encountered a huge loss of time when changing headers that employed a graphic image at the end of a text line. Charlie’s solution was an elegant application of InDesign’s ability to add graphic elements to text boxes (one I hope to find a use for in the future).
The evening ended with drawings for a plethora of door prizes generously provided by Central Coast Solutions, Peachpit Press, and Adobe, ranging from iTunes gift cards to a copy of the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Premium package.
