Event Details

The holiday decorations have been boxed up, the Christmas trees have been dragged to the wood chipper, and winter is upon us. But despite the cold weather The New York City InDesign User Group will heat things up by kicking off its ninth year with presentations on two hot topics that you won't want to miss.

Following opening announcements by chapter representative Scott Citron, noted author of many books and training videos, Mordy Golding will take the stage to present Adobe Flash Catalyst, a new Adobe application, currently in beta and available for downloading at labs.adobe.com. Flash Catalyst allows designers to quickly create interactive Flash content and rich internet applications without having to write any code.

Meant to bridge the gap between designers and developers, Flash Catalyst allows the designer to work with familiar applications, such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Among the topics covered will be:

• Creating interactive content from Photoshop and Illustrator design compositions
• Turning ordinary graphics into functional components like buttons and sliders
• Using smooth transitions and animation techniques

Following the break, New Jersey based designer and consultant, Bob Levine will discuss the ins and outs of moving from print design to web design including a demonstration of Adobe BrowserLab. BrowserLab is an Adobe service that allows web designers to view their web pages as they will appear in any number of different web browsers. Some of the points that Bob will touch on:

• The good, the bad, and the ugly of moving content from InDesign to Dreamweaver
• Best practices to assure compliance with web standards
• How to force all browser to the same defaults
• The major pitfalls awaiting the unprepared print designer

The evening will conclude with its customary raffle of software and other gifts.
