We are excited to start our fourth year as the Orlando chapter. We already have the *best line up of speakers ever!* to fill the rest of the year. Be sure to mark your calendars for these Wednesdays:
March 25th
May 27th
July 22
September 23rd
November 18

------------------------------------------------------------------------
First presenter: Douglas Mitchell, Certified Adobe instructor
Illustrator Essentials: How to Draw with Pen tool and more...
doug@trainingbrain.com, http://www.TrainingBrain.com, Free Ai workbook on website.

Pen Tool Drawing
Douglas demonstrated Pen Tool essentials, saying the pen tool has only two missions in life: creating straight lines and curves lines and gave us the only (5) possible conditions to face when using the Pen tool. He also went over other basics such as straight segmented lines, view/preview, Selection/Direct Selection tool, Lasso tool, anchor points, nudging, open/closed paths, Pencil tool, curved paths, drawing simple shapes, using special brushes, and more.

On-Board Free Illustrator Artwork using the Symbols library. Douglas showed to Break Link and edit symbols for use in your projects.

Follow-up Workshop: Illustrator Essentials, April 18. See "Upcoming Industry Events" below.

Second Presenter:
InDesign Basics with Mark Poulalion
Mark discussed several things such as templates, hierarchy within master pages, libraries, styles sheets, and nested styles.

Mark's cool website share (thanks to the gang at InDesign Secrets):
InDesign Proxy: Making Mac OS X launch the correct version of InDesign or InCopy, no matter how many versions you have installed on your computer.

NEW: “Stump the Chumps”
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Between 6 and 7pm, we nosh on food while you ask technical questions (or listen to others ask) to our Adobe Certified Experts. Here's an example:

Q: My InCopy files on PC are exporting to Mac corrupted. Why?
A: Your PC person should open the InDesign (.indd) file within InCopy. Things could be getting corrupt when you open the placed InCopy stories (.incx) files separately.

Q: Without MarkzwareQ2ID and without older versions of Quark available, what’s the best way to convert a Quark doc to InDesign?
A: Buy Markzware Q2ID!

Q: InDesign CS3 doc with 60-70 pages in one document, including invoices. When we make minor change on a middle page, and save, the doc jumps up to page one. How can we solve this?
A: Consider creating a book of smaller page documents, rather than a single long document.

Thanks for your support...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before our main presenters got started, Faith Amon talked about all the 'tools of the trade,' our prize diva, Kristan Braswell, collected and discussed the importance of purchasing raffle tickets. We don't have a membership fee. The money raised from our raffle tickets help us rent the space, provide an abundance of food, and fly in and accommodate our presenters.

Thank you

A special thank you to Cameron Thorp for taking the photos, Faith Amon for helping with the auction, cleanup, and registration, and Susan Pfeil for setup and cleanup.

Thanks as always to our location and communication sponsors.

Thank you Max Your Macs, one of our new sponsors. Please support their services.

We appreciate everyone who attended! Tell your friends they can join us, too!

Learn the Art of Template Design

Faced with tight deadlines? Tired of laboring over repetitive layouts? Then this meeting is for you! Gabriel Powell, author of Instant InDesign: Designing Templates for Fast and Efficient Page Layout and Adobe Certified Instructor, will be introducing us to the art of template design. He'll begin by showing us how to develop the right layout grid for any publication. Then he'll explain best practices for setting up master pages, generating style sheets, and preparing your templates for success in a live production workflow. You'll also get a wealth of indispensable tips that will ease the tedium of production and give you the freedom to concentrate on concept and design.

What makes templates so important? First, they guide the placement of text and graphics, and provide a well-established starting point from which a publication can be easily created. Second, and most important, they save a lot of setup time, ensure design consistency, and significantly minimize the possibility for error. Designing a template is expert work, demanding all of your attention, skill, good judgment, and experience. Gabriel's book, Instant InDesign, is dedicated to teaching you the tricks of the trade and provides you with the knowledge you need to create exceptional templates.
A limited supply of discounted copies ($35 each) of Instant InDesign will be available for purchase at the meeting. If you already own a copy of the book, be sure to bring it so Gabriel can sign it. If you'd like to buy a copy of the book before the meeting, click the following link to save up to 30%:

Bring a friend or new member to the March meeting and you and your friend will be entered to win one of the boxed versions of CS3 software. We would like to see our membership grow!**

Reflecting our new location and a broader constituency and interest, our group will no longer focus solely on Adobe InDesign. Instead, the group will be renamed the Adobe Creative Suite User Group: Orlando Chapter and will rededicate itself to supporting all programs of the Adobe Creative Suite.

Artists, designers, students, interested professionals or amateurs, print and new media, everyone is invited to this exciting User Group.

Adobe Creative Suite Applications work on both Apple and Windows platforms. Therefore, our user group is non-specific for platform, open to any and all interested; we address very current and topical information.

Our presentations are by industry experts, local designers, authors and Adobe representatives. We explore their experiences, projects, how they did it, what programs they used and how these programs work. Be sure to visit your member page to check our user group benefits and see examples of topics and meeting notes from our local group and other national and international groups.

Our presentations are informative and focused. There will be answers to questions and you’re guaranteed to discover new methods and means to accomplish new things with your chosen toolset.

If you would like to be a presenter, sponsor or have a service or product that you would like to share with our User Group please contact Edward Feldman at efeldman@mac.com.

Looking forward to seeing you there,
Edward Feldman, Orlando Chapter Representative
and the Orlando Creative Suite User Group Steering Committee
