Meeting Notes Archive
January 22, 2008Our first meeting of 2008 was a great success, with over 70 members spending an incredible two hours with Noha Edell of Adobe systems. Noha inspired us with her presentation on OpenType fonts and creating interactive PDFs from within InDesign. Interactive PDF files are incredibly powerful, and can contain embedded QuickTime movies, buttons, and hyperlinks, to be saved for web and print use!

The crux of the session: OpenType uses Unicode as its basis, making it consistent across all platforms. Not only can a font be made to adjust to the designer's choices very quickly and easily, but also, most OpenType fonts include glyphs and alphabets for other languages. Styles can be created for documents, and Sets can be created to save particular combinations commonly used by the operator for particular fonts. OpenType is a superb development, and all Adobe fonts have been converted to this format, allowing operators and designers to enjoy both the huge time-saving of not having to “tweak” fonts and the virtually infinite variations of fonts and styles now available at their fingertips. Needless to say, all of these typographical characteristics are honored in all PDF files, whether interactive or simply final PDF files for print.
Attendee comments:
“Loved it. The commitment of Adobe to participate in these user group meetings says something about the quality of the company…The OpenType demo and info tonight was very interesting and showed me that a good tool is worth its money. Great to connect with others and hear from an Adobe person what Adobe is doing and thinking.”
“I didn’t know what OpenType was until tonight. I never had imagined its capabilities. It was also great to see the interactive capabilities…”
“As a Quark expert (in a former life) and the go-to “queen of type.” typestyles, and troubleshooting of RIP errors, I was completely spellbound! I can't wait to start using powerful OpenType’s characteristics and advantages…the topic was of great interest, and whetted my appetite for even more workshops presented by Adobe representatives.”
“InDesign User Groups is not only a great way for professionals to learn a few more tricks (without having to take a University class), it is also a good networking and bonding experience. Thank you IDUG.”
“One on one contact is very helpful, as is the networking and learning from both other users and the Adobe rep.”
