Event Details

Even with the threat of thunderstorms, more than 160 brave members of the world’s largest InDesign User Group enjoyed an exciting evening—an evening made all the more exciting when the fire alarm went off and we all had to exit the building. Fortunately, there was no real fire, just some smoke up on the fourth floor and we were back in ten minutes.

The first hour was “meet and greet” where our members chowed down on delicious pizza, fresh fruit, tasty cookies, and drinks. Then it was down into the newly refurbished auditorium. Attendees may not have noticed, but we kept the lights up and yet the screen was easy to view thanks to a new, more powerful and higher resolution video projector. Speakers appreciated the larger, flat-topped podium where you could place your computer and not have your mouse go sliding onto the floor.

We kicked off the meeting with a quick update about Scott Citron, NY IDUG chapter rep. Scott was in a horrific car accident, plunging 50 feet down an embankment. After several weeks in the hospital including several days in a coma, Scott is now undergoing physical therapy in LA. Scott has presented to our group several times. His friends have come together to show their support. They established several fund raising activities to raise money for his recovery. If you are interested in participating in the online auction or any other activity, please visit: http://indesignsecrets.com/supporting-scott-citrons-recovery.php.

Then, chapter representative Ken Chaletzky announced our user-group-sponsored Creative Suite 4 Launch Event on October 16th at the new Sidney Harman Hall. He reminded the group of the sell-outs of the CS2 and CS3 launch events that the group had sponsored, and encouraged them to register early to guarantee good seats. To register, please visit: http://www.dc-id.org.

After Ken’s announcements, Noha Edell of Adobe took the stage and delivered an excellent and entertaining presentation explaining how transparency gets introduced into a layout, how to use InDesign’s Separation and Flattener Preview panels to examine the files, how to create Flattener Presets, how to export to various flavors of PDF, and how to use some of the new output preview, color conversion, and Preflight tools in Acrobat 9 to check and fix the resulting PDFs. She ended her presentation with building a custom preflight profile to correct black text with registration color and by creating a droplet to convert color files to grayscale. In addition to the slides that she used (”Nedell-Transparency_Slides”), Noha is making available for download two additional documents: Nedell_Transparency Resources and Nedell_Acrobat 9 Stds-Preflight. You can download these files at the bottom of this page.

Thank you

-to Mac and Robin for helping with registration
-to Tim and John for keeping the stream of pizza flowing
-to our sponsors for providing the raffle prizes
-and to everyone who was there...
